“I think it would be fun to run a newspaper.”
I’ve been putting this off. Yes, for fear. But this is my action in spite of it all: I’m writing a blog post.
The title is a line from Citizen Kane, considered by some to be the greatest movie ever made. A bit audacious for a blog post but it makes my point of why I’m writing this thing at all, if you know the scene. Kane flippantly discards his millions of dollars in assets, save one measly little means of expression and change, because he sees potential.
Slowly over the years I’ve tiptoed backwards off of the online dance floor, and I’ve got my back leaning gently on the darkened wall. I’ve stood in the dark so long I’ve forgotten (or never learned) the dance moves. I’ve let fear elbow me into a passive corner, and kept my mouth shut.
Today is a break in the silence, and maybe even a tap of my big toe (you won’t be able to detect it through my heavy shoes, but it’s tapping nonetheless). Since the words have been written, and the item successfully published, I think I’ll leave it there for now.
“Is that really your idea of how to run a newspaper?”
“I don’t know how to run a newspaper, Mr. Thatcher. I just try everything I can think of.”
